Kids Running America Changing Lives

Reversing a Trend

The statistics are scary:  the percentage of children who are obese has more than doubled, and among adolescents the rates have more than tripled since 1980, with nearly one in three children in America overweight or obese. One third of all children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at some point in their lives. Many others will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and asthma.

Obesity is a risk factor for these chronic health conditions but is associated with problems such as poor self-esteem and poor school performance, affecting many additional areas of a child’s life and future.

A Proud Coach and Her Kids Running America Team

I started a youth running club a few years back when I came across the Colorado start-up, non-profit organization Kids Running America. They were expanding their program throughout Colorado schools and participating in the Denver Marathon Kids Race, and then the Portland Marathon Kids Race. This spring, more than 700 youth runners throughout Colorado will meet at the Kaiser Permanente Colfax Marathon finish line to celebrate their completion of the marathon distance. Read about this program and then go to City Park on May 14, 2011 at 10:30am to cheer on these inspiring athletes.

Kids Running America –

Running Down Childhood Obesity

Kids Running America is a running program enabling kids to go the distance………………..

THE MARATHON DISTANCE!

Mission: To reduce the epidemic of childhood obesity Kids Running America (KRA) is dedicated to creating an awareness and promoting a healthy lifestyle through a running program for America’s school age children.

Kids Running America, is a 501 (c) (3) incremental running program designed for kids to train for the 26.2 mile marathon distance over a given time frame, finishing their final distance at one of the KRA Final Mile Events.

Children run various distances to accrue a sum total of 26.2 miles. The first 25.2 miles are run independently or with a team over a given time frame. At the completion of running a total of 25.2 miles, participants meet to run their last mile and cross the actual finish line of their chosen Final Mile Event.

Kids Running America participants earn the unforgettable reward of coming together to support, complete, and celebrate the accomplishment of completing the marathon distance. They receive a KRA finisher’s medal and a certificate of going the marathon distance, but most important, a sense of pride.

Make a Difference in a Child’s Life

Become a Kids Running America Mentor or sponsor a child and make a difference in a child’s life. From one of  my running club participants:

“Ms. Angela was my coach for 2 years, and she taught me everything I know about running.  From the right way to stretch before and after a run, to the right way to breathe when you run.  She inspired me to start running many different races, from short one-mile races to 10k’s and more!  Thanks to her I am planning to run a bunch of different 10k’s over the summer. If I had any other coach I probably wouldn’t be nearly as motivated and stick with it.”
