As we go through the day, we put one foot in front of the other to progress from sunup to sundown. Yogic philosophy believes setting intentions for the day can increase enjoyment and productivity. Setting intentions with our body can create more energy and effectiveness.

Body awareness brings a consciousness to our behavior that influences the environment and the people around us.  This consciousness of our actions and the resulting reactions provides a tool for evaluating our effectiveness.

Bringing attention to breathing patterns and body posture is the first step to body awareness. Deep breathing and a relaxed, alert posture projects an attentive and results-oriented image. Use the information and exercise below to help check the image you are projecting. …read more of Body Awareness Exercise to increase Energy and Efficiency here

The rise in chronic health issues and the heated debate over managing health care costs can be an opportunity to explore how we can take control of our health and reduce recovery time.

There are easy and effective lifestyle changes that can go a long way toward reducing medical costs and improving the quality of your life. Create your own stimulus package by adding these amendments to your personal health plan.

Amendment 1: Manage inflammation

Consistent inflammation in the body can lead to many chronic conditions such as arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Inflammation is also thought to play a role in the development of allergies and autoimmune disease. Elevated stress places additional strain the body to maintain stability within the cells.

We all go through periods of deficit, stages of doubt in ourselves, our beliefs and sense of direction. These deficits usually come about during times of nutritional, physical and spiritual neglect, which often result in increased stress and illness.

Learning about our personal processes helps us to become physically and spiritually aware.  We can become grounded through meditation, affirmations, exercise and journaling, which help us to recognize our behavior patterns.

This is the journey, to start acting from a place of wisdom, not one of fear.

Sleep deficit

Adequate restful sleep is important for the regeneration of cells and in creating and maintaining a healthy body and mind. …read more of Managing Periods of Deficit here

Our body is talking to us, for many screaming at us to listen. It gives us continual clues trying to get our attention.  We can feel butterflies in the stomach, hear ringing in our ears and see the hair standing up on our arm, but may not tune in to understand what it means.

More often than not we tune out because we don’t want to hear. We are all born with this innate ability to know what our body is telling us, but over time we quit trusting what we hear.

Exercise presents a great opportunity to listen to your body and to tune in to all it is trying to tell you. You can learn to listen to your body again through your exercise routine. …read more of Develop Intuition Through Exercise here

reflection.jpg

In today’s hectic society, we are increasingly bombarded with huge amounts of information and our brain’s filtering system can get bogged down with data overload. These experiences are stored in our cellular memory and retrieved when something stimulates recall.

The following techniques help filter information and environmental stimuli by using the powers you already own.

Environmental Power – Influence your Surroundings

Both consciously and subconsciously, you are constantly observing cumulative experiences of your day, all of which are stored in the cells. Censor the stimuli in your environment.  This is the first step to influencing the suggestions you receive. …read more of Improve Your Performance with The Power of Suggestion here

There is a stereotypical image that meditation can only be performed sitting cross-legged on the floor, eyes closed and without movement.

Proper breathing is the common denominator in both exercise and meditation. While meditation is all about the breath, these same breathing techniques can be applied to enhance your exercise routine.

When physically active, the muscles warm up, the blood moves more freely and endorphins kick in and make us feel more awake and alive.

Applying these yoga breathing techniques during exercise will help to reduce tension and negative thought processes, which open the mind to new ideas and paths to problem solving. …read more of Exercise as Meditation: 5 Techniques for Success here

meditation.jpg

In Yoga, the three main practices are breathing, postures and meditation.

The breathing practice, or pranayama and the physical practice, or asana are performed to prepare the body for the mental and spiritual practice of meditation.

Learning to clear the mind and bring awareness to the breath is the beginning of a meditation practice. Focusing on the breath can be thought of as a distraction, which keeps the mind from wandering and gently brings your focus back to the present. …read more of Meditation is all about the Breath here

The Importance of a Breathing Practice

breathe.jpg

We breathe naturally all day long so why practice? In the modern, western lifestyle, as we schedule more in less time our breathing also tries to do more in less time.  To accomplish this, breathing becomes more shallow pulling air mostly into the upper part of the lungs.

Shallow breathing sends the signal that the body is under stress.  Because the body doesn’t know how to distinguish what is causing the stress, it reacts in the same way, by pumping hormones into the blood.  Over time, this continual signaling wears the body out, breaking down organs and tissues and causing hypertension.

Nasal breathing and deep diaphragmatic breathing are the focus of a beginning breathing practice. Drawing the air through nasal passages and sinus cavities triggers the parasympathetic nervous system and sends a subconscious message to the body that it is relaxed. …read more of The Importance of a Breathing Practice here
